A closer look at what it takes to fabricate and install structural support for medical equipment in an active building
A surgical boom light doesn't hang from a ceiling. It hangs from steel that was built to hold it. That distinction is the difference between a mount that performs for the life of a facility and one that becomes a maintenance headache within a year.
Our crew recently completed a surgical boom light mount installation in the new operating room lab at Wilson Community College, working alongside 35 North Construction out of Durham. The project is a good example of what structural steel fabrication for medical equipment involves, from shop drawings to the final bolt-up overhead.
Fabrication starts on the ground
Before any steel goes near the ceiling, it gets built in the shop. For this installation, that meant welded beams reinforced with stiffeners, gusseted supports for added rigidity, and a bolted mounting plate machined to the exact hole pattern and center opening the boom light manufacturer specified. Every component was primed and staged before it left the yard.
This groundwork matters because surgical equipment mounts operate under tight tolerances. Boom lights, arms, and other ceiling-mounted OR equipment are engineered to attach to a very specific footprint. There's no room for improvising dimensions once the assembly is airborne.
The real challenge: installing into an occupied ceiling
Fabrication is only half the job. Installing a structural steel mount into a ceiling already full of insulated duct, ceiling grid, hangers, and existing structure is where the work gets difficult.
Our crew worked overhead with welding blankets hung to protect the finished work below, threading a heavy steel assembly into a space with almost no room to negotiate. This is a common reality in healthcare construction: the mount has to be engineered around what's already there, not the other way around.
A few things make overhead structural installs like this successful:
Precise fabrication tolerances. If the shop work isn't dead-on, field adjustments overhead become riskier and slower.
Site protection. Welding blankets and careful staging keep the finished ceiling, flooring, and equipment below from damage during the lift and weld.
Coordination with the general contractor. Boom light mounts sit at the intersection of structural, mechanical, and equipment trades. Miscommunication there causes rework for everyone downstream.
Why precision on placement isn't optional
A surgical boom light mount only works if it lands exactly where the drawings specify. The equipment has fixed tolerances, the operating room has a fixed layout, and the steel has to sit precisely at the intersection of both. Getting close instead of correct doesn't just create a problem for the installing crew, it hands a problem to every trade that follows, from equipment installers to inspectors to the facility's maintenance team years down the road.
