MSSW Moves Into a Bigger Fabrication Shop to Keep Up With Growing Client Demand

Why we outgrew our old space, and what it means for the GCs, architects, and project teams who rely on us

For years, our shop on Miscellaneous Stainless & Steel Works' original site was where every project started. It's where our AWS-certified welders cut, fit, and finished stainless steel, aluminum, and mild steel work for general contractors, architects, and commercial clients across Durham and the surrounding region. That shop taught us a lot. It also, eventually, ran out of room.

We recently relocated to a larger custom metal fabrication facility built to match the pace of the work our clients are bringing us.

Why We Made the Move

Growth in custom metal fabrication doesn't always show up as more square footage on paper. It shows up as tighter project timelines, larger scopes, and clients who need a fabricator that can handle more without slowing down.

A few of the practical reasons behind the move:

  • More floor space for larger or multiple simultaneous projects, so scheduling isn't a bottleneck

  • Improved workflow for stainless steel, aluminum, and mild steel fabrication, keeping quality consistent as volume grows

  • Room to expand equipment and staging areas, supporting more complex commercial and institutional work

  • Better logistics for staging and delivery, which matters most for general contractors working tight install windows

What This Means for Our Clients

If you're a general contractor, project manager, commercial architect, or facilities lead who has worked with MSSW before, this move is about capacity, not change in how we operate.

  • Faster turnaround on larger scopes. More space means more concurrent work without compromising fit and finish.

  • Same craftsmanship, same team. Our AWS-certified welders and the people you've worked with are still the ones on your project.

  • More capability for complex fabrication needs, from custom railings and structural steel components to specialty stainless installations for restaurants, universities, and retail fit-outs.

A Bittersweet Transition

Packing up a shop you've built a business inside of isn't purely a logistics exercise. Taking down our old signage and clearing out a space where so many projects came together was a genuinely hard day for our team. But growth means building toward what's next, and that meant finding a facility that could support where MSSW is headed, not just where we've been.

What's Next

We're already settling into the new shop and getting projects moving. If you're planning a commercial build-out, renovation, or new construction project that needs custom stainless steel, aluminum, or mild steel fabrication, now is a good time to talk with us about scope and timeline.
